Be Perfect…What?

By Jason | October 28, 2009

We spent this past weekend studying the Sermon on the Mount with our High School Youth Group on a weekend retreat.  As you begin to listen to the words of Jesus in chapter 5 and continue on into chapter 7 it can become a little bit overwhelming.  Jesus even points out in Matthew 5:48, “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”  At one point during one of our breakout discussions, one of our teen girls pointed out, “This all seems really good, but it just seems impossible to do.  How are we supposed to be perfect?”

As we continued the study something begin to click and make sense.  Jesus says, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.  For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.”  Matthew 7:7-8.   It was almost as if Jesus understood people would be saying at this point (of course He understood), “How do I do all of this?  How can I be perfect?”  And so he throws in “ask, seek, and knock”.  He is basically saying you can’t do it alone.  You can’t be perfect alone.  The only way to be made perfect is through asking God and allowing Me, Jesus Christ, to make you perfect.

I find peace and comfort in knowing that I can ask, seek, knock, and that then I will find.  I know I am not perfect, not even close.  But I know I ask God everyday to help me to be more like His Son, to serve as He would, to treat people as He would, and to live a life that is worthy of His calling.
