Fire Drills and Faith
By Jason | November 4, 2009
I have to throw out major kudos to our “Mom’s Day Out Program” at our church. Yesterday around lunch time the fire alarms started going off. My first thought was “Not another fire drill”. They do them like once a month, and the flashing lights and loud alarm make it difficult to work peacefully in the office. One of our administrative assistants came running by and yelled “That’s not a fire drill.” We took off out of the office down towards our children’s area. At that point we could smell something like melted or hot plastic. We knew this wasn’t just a false alarm. We ran to check on the children and let them also know this wasn’t a drill. I went into one of the hallways where the little one year olds are. To my amazement the teachers had already loaded the children up in the cribs and pushed them outside. They did this within about a minute to a minute and a half! I couldn’t believe how fast they got out of the building. I looked outside and most of the children and teachers were already out; safe and away from the building.
I would have to say they looked prepared. They looked like they knew what they were doing. And they looked like they had done it many times before. I guess all those monthly fire drills over the years had paid off!
How about in our lives; in our walk with Christ? Are you prepared for fires that may come up? I’m not talking about practicing sin so that you are ready when greater temptation comes your way. But are you prepared when it comes to being tempted? Do you know the Word and are you prepared to use it to put out any fires and avoid fires? What about practicing doing the right thing all the time so that when temptation does come you’re already prepared to do the right thing? And don’t forget, Jesus tells us to ask God for help, “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” Matthew 6:13.
There is a reason we practice fire drills. And there is even more reason to put our faith into practice.
