From Dark to Light
By Jason | November 11, 2009
This past summer on a mission trip in Colorado our mission team went on a turf tour. Basically, we walked the streets of the downtown Denver area learning about the homeless culture, where they sleep, what they do, and about the typical homeless lifestyle. It was very informative and we learned a great deal from it. At one point on our journey we were taken into a large drainage pipe that feeds into a river. This pipe is the nighttime home to many street people. As we walked away from the entrance of the tunnel the space got darker and darker. Finally, the only light that we could see was the light from our guide’s flashlight. We stopped and he began to talk. Then he turned the light off: darkness; complete and utter darkness. It was so dark I couldn’t see my hand six inches from my face. In fact, it was so completely dark that I couldn’t tell if my eyes were opened or shut. It was frightening, quiet, and lonely. After a long pause of silence one team member began to panic. Shortly, after the guide turned his light back on. With that one small flashlight, we could all see again.
I John 1:5-7, “This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.”
John tells us that life without God is like total darkness and life with God is light. Light and darkness cannot coexist. If it’s dark and you add even one light, the darkness is gone. I know what total darkness feels like and life without God is frightening, quiet, and lonely. Praise God that He sent His son Jesus so that I don’t have to experience that darkness and instead, through my choices, and the blood of Jesus, I can walk in the light and be purified from my sins.
